Ordinary Time
Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treats you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as Yahweh had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
You know the particular ache of being called but not shown. It is not doubt about the voice; it is the vertigo of a future that refuses to materialize. You want a map, or at least a glimpse of the destination, but all you have is the command and the One who gave it.
Abram was seventy-five when he lifted his foot from the dust of Haran. Imagine the weight of that sandal, the small sound of it coming down on the other side of the threshold. He had a name, a household, a father's house behind him. The land was not named; only the promise was. 'I will show you,' Yahweh said, and Abram went. The road did not appear ahead of him; it appeared beneath him, one step at a time. The heat of the day, the creak of the pack, the silence of the horizon—these were his companions. He did not see the land, but he saw the One who said 'I will show you.'
Jesus says to you, 'Follow me,' and He does not hand you the itinerary. The Father calls you by name, not because you have mastered the road, but because you have Him. You are not asked to see the land, only to trust the One who shows it. The promise is not a preview; it is a person.
You are not asked to see the land, only to trust the One who shows it.
Lord, I am standing at my own Haran. My foot is heavy, and the road is hidden. Give me the simple obedience of Abram—not the whole map, but the next step. I release my need to know. I trust You to show. Amen.
